Summary: Nick Allen, was known to be quite the troublemaker. He knew how to manipulate teachers, get out of homework, and mainly disrupt class. When he gets to fifth grade however that may or may not change. He tries all his tricks on his new teacher Mrs. Granger. She is different from all his other teachers and his tricks don’t work. For example Mrs. Granger is obsessed with the dictionary. Nick tries to get out of homework by asking her questions about the dictionary right before she was to give the class the assignment. This comes back to slap him in the face as she tells him, that’s a great question Nick. Why don’t you research that tonight and present it to the class tomorrow. Nick is really just thrown back at how scary and good she is. One day he asks her who decides what words get put in the dictionary. She tells him that everyone does by using the word a lot. That day Nick makes up another name for pen. He called it a frindle. Pretty soon he get his friends to start saying and Mrs. Granger is really upset about this. She tries everyway to make him stop using the word. It doesn’t work and pretty soon the whole school is using it. It was getting a lot of publicity and was spreading into the town, and soon the nation. One man even started making pens that said frindle on them. Nick starts to feel bad about what he did. Many years later he goes to college and receives a letter from Mrs. Granger, along with the note there is a dictionary. In the dictionary is the word frindle. Mrs. Granger tells Nick how proud she is of him. All these years Nick thought she didn’t like him and he caused a huge stir in the town.
Reaction: I had never read this book before, and I absolutely loved it. It is a book that I’m definitely going to implement into my classroom. It is a funny book with many things to keep children interested. The length I thought was great, and the lessons that kids can learn out of this book are endless.
Problem: Nick caused a huge stir in the town. Mrs. Granger held many of the kids after school, for using the word frindle. This made many parents mad and therefore the school heard about it. Nicks parents were called in and surprisingly most people were on Nick’s side and thought what is the harm of a child using a made up word.
Recommendation: I would tell everyone no matter the age to read this book if you haven’t already. I know how much I enjoyed reading it and I think no matter how old you are you will think that it is a great book.
