Her parents can’t afford to feed and accommodate her anymore so they send her to live a long way away with her Grandma Dowdrel. At first her grandma just seems like she doesn’t want her there. Her grandma was known to be an ornery old lady and people in town stayed out of her way. Mary Alice’s first day of school she has a run in with the class bully. Her grandma takes care of the girl and she never bothers her again. When Halloween comes around Mary Alice and her grandma keep busy stopping the towns hooligans. Around Christmas time Mary Alice is chose to be Mary in the school program. She is surprised to she her grandma come but also bringing her older brother. She dearly missed her older brother and was so excited. Her grandma had paid for her brother to come for a visit. At the end when her parents say that they can take her back again, she doesn’t want to go. She says that she needs to watch out for her grandma.

Reaction: I thought this book was very well written. It had many adventures of this little girl and her grandma. That is so neat for a child to see that bond between them. The author did a great job of portraying how the grandma was.

Problem: Mary Alice has to move from Chicago and live with her grandma. She doesn’t want to be away from her family and at first doesn’t like her grandma.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book completely. I can see why it won an award. It is just a great written children’s book.
